The United Kingdom is a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy. It is comprised of three separate and distinct legal systems. English law, which is based on common law, applies in England and Wales. Northern Ireland law, which is also based on common law, applies in Northern Ireland. Scots law, which is based on both civil law and common law, applies in Scotland.
